About the Work
Fabian Marti likes topics that emerge out of obscurity. No wonder then that the artist focuses on photograms, which were of big interest to the surrealists who were fascinated by unexpected results. Like them Marti is also very much interested in losing control of an artistic process to allow the subconscious to take an active part in it.
Marti never works with the camera directly. His large-format prints are either photograms or are created by a desktop scanner. Using computer made stencils, Marti exposes the photo paper directly in sunlight. The ink colour is applied afterwards, again in manual labor. Combining manual methods of artistic production with the latest technologies and mechanical reproduction techniques is a key element in Marti's work.
