Ink, blank newspaper on canvas, wooden frame206 x 156 x 4.5 cmFor There’s Tears (2015) Latifa Echakhch uses old newspapers and turns them into an abstract painting of sorts. The tint on the pages is almost washed out, the letters have vanished and so have the images. All that is left is a grey colour field, reminiscent of classical abstraction – but made out of what once had a very concrete and precise meaning. A series like Derives, on the other hand, follows a slightly different approach. Here, Echakhch refers to a traditional ornamental element from Islamic architecture, a jagged star. Broken up and prolonged, these thick decorative forms could potentially run as an endless line. Again, Ekakhch uses a concrete reference and opens it up toward new and other meanings.
