“Pisonia with acidification graph” (2009) is painted on Judy Watson's typical support, the unstretched canvas, and depicts the branch from a Pisonia tree, which is native to area of her ancestors, close to the Great Barrier Reef. Along the lower portion of the painting runs a depiction of the Hoegh-Guldberg graph, which is a measure of desalination pioneered at the University of Queensland. This alignment of imagery and concerns close to the artist’s heart – her personal history, and the environment – results in a work of simplicity and beauty.
