Colour only slowly found its way into the work of Imi Knoebel. Initially, Knoebel concentrated on black and white. Since the mid-1970s, though, he has consistently widened his pallet. It now includes strong primary colours as well as many different pastel shades. Recent works like Bild 04.02.2015, for example, showcase slightly muddy tones applied on thin aluminium boards. These works display something very different from the rigidity and restraints commonly associated with minimalism and abstraction – an almost jaunty and free play with colour and form.
