Two beautiful landscapes shot in the Sydney suburb of Homebush and the city of Wollongong by the German artist Elger Esser bring a fresh eye to familiar subjects. Under Esser’s dream-like gaze and utilising his well-known technique of visual ‘softening’, we experience an Australian landscape that is unfamiliar. Esser has captured an architectural imprint in nature (a lighthouse and a shipwreck, both in water reflecting cloudy skies) in a soft yellow-green light that contradicts the assumption of Australia’s light as bright and sharp. Both structures serve as protective beacons for the landscape beyond.
