About the Work
While new media and the information age have had a great impact on contemporary artists, Luc Tuymans has continued to paint and to believe in the relevance of painting.
However, in the early 1980s he lost faith in the medium and gave it up for two years. During this time, he worked as a film maker and, when he returned to painting with new energy, he introduced new techniques such as cropping, close-ups, framing and sequencing, which remain key elements of his work today.
Tuymans' sparsely-coloured works cover historical subjects, religious motives, everyday life objects and popular inspirations from film and television.
