Kimsooja’s Seven Wishes from 2004 is a series of seven Iris prints, for which the artist used motifs from fabrics traditionally given to newlyweds in Korea. These fabrics are a recurring feature and material in the Korean artist’s work. Highly coded, all the motifs symbolise specific wishes – the purses stand for prosperity, the turtles for longevity. These fabrics might stay with a person for their whole life. Sometimes they are used to wrap new-born babies as well as the bodies of the dead.
